Featured Speaker: Mr. Robin Turner

Biography

Robin Turner teaches English at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, where he has spent all eighteen years of his career in education, passionately working toward enabling underrepresented students to flourish academically, enter college, and succeed in earning a degree. Along with teaching and being a writing leader in the Puente Program for the past thirteen years, he also teaches the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class, the S.A.T. preparation classes, CAHSEE intervention classes, and has taught Freshman Composition and Critical Thinking and Writing at Fullerton College on a part-time basis. He has a BA in English and an MA in American Studies, both from Cal State Fullerton.

His book, Greater Expectations: Teaching Academic Literacy to Underrepresented Students, released by Stenhouse Publishers in 2008, focuses on the lack of meaningful academic preparation that too many students receive as a result of NCLB. It argues that through rich experiences in reading and writing in a community-based classroom, the tide of remediation and lowered expectations can be turned.
