Steve Grant - Teacher Librarian

Beginning my teaching career at Torrey Pines High School (Encinitas, CA) in 1977 I taught English, computers, and reading at Torrey Pines, Oak Crest Junior High, and Diegueño Junior High until 1991. I transitioned to Teacher Librarian my last two years at Diegueño while commuting weekly to Cal State L.A. to earn my permanent Library Media Services credential, then became Teacher Librarian at Montgomery Academy, followed by La Jolla High School 1992-2008. I have also taught Mira Costa College adults. I earned my BA General Literature at UCSD, and my Masters Degree in Education with specialization in Library Media Services and Teacher Librarian credential from Cal State Los Angeles. I have presented at many professional conferences (including CUE and CSLA) and have taught a number of workshops (most lately for the UCSD Supercomputer's "TeacherTECH" series) for more than fifteen years. I am a member of Computer Using Educators (CUE), California School Library Association (CSLA), and the Classroom of the Future's "Teacher Innovation Space" working group.

An early adopter of technology in education, I've been using the Web since 1990, when I accessed it via a text-only interface and a "cutting edge" 14.4K modem(!)  I have watched successive waves of students waste hours as they blunder about trying to find information on the Web without learning advanced search techniques, understanding the structure and nature of information, or considering the authority of what they find.  As a result, two of my favorite quotes have become the following:

I have been a surfer (the real kind--ocean waves) since 1970. As such, I have always objected to the use of the term "surfing" applied to browsing the Web... or even flipping through television channels.
