LA JOLLA HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

The La Jolla High School Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1974 by La Jolla High School counselor, Billy Harris ('68-90).  Its purpose is to provide financial assistance for college expenses to select graduating seniors, primarily on a financial needs basis.  The Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation, formed in 1997, raises funds from donations and sponsored events.

In 1974, the first year, five awards were made of two hundred dollars for each senior.  Since then the number and size of awards have steadily risen: in 2002, 37 awards totaling $63,000 were made.  Since the beginning of the Foundation, awards have been made to over 750 seniors.  The total amount awarded is over $650,000.

Donors to the Foundation are assured that all donated funds will be used for scholarships, that recipients of awards will be selected carefully and fairly, and that evidence of need to meet the educational goal of the student is the primary consideration.  If you would like to make a donation or create a memorial scholarship please call the alumni office at (858) 551-9871 or Chairman Mark Nussbaum at (858) 454-9625 or write him at his e-mail at mark.nussbaum@ubspw.com.

VILLARREAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE PROGRAM

The Villarreal Scholar-Athlete Program, founded in 1998 by Patricia Villarreal '90 and Mailee Ferguson '92, is a mentoring program to motivate and guide first generation LJHS students toward college.  Two sophomores are selected each year who receive three years of individualized mentoring, summer internships, and a $1,000-$5,000 college scholarship.  The first two Scholar Athletes graduated in June 2001 and are currently attending local colleges.  The program is working to build a $50,000 scholarship endowment, of which in excess of $40,000 has been raised.  While the Villarreal Scholar-Athlete Program is administered by the LJHS Scholarship Foundation, it is itšs own separate Scholarship Program.  Send donations to the LJHS Scholarship Foundation, Attn: Villarreal Scholar Athlete Program, 750 Nautilus Street, Ca.  92037.
